WEEK 2 class 1 & 2
28 JUNE 1914- THE SPARK!
In 1900 , almost everyone would agree
that to be a great nation, you must colonize (to feed need for both trade and
prestige)
In 1800 , both France and Britain had
large empires and continues to grow during the 19th century
In 1870’s , Germany and Italy became
united countries for the 1st time , and both wanted to develop overseas
empires.
KEY POINT: Prussian war
(Franco-Prussian War) WHY IS IT A KEY WORD?
In the years upt to 1900 , there was a
strong competition between European powers for expansion m especially in
Africa.
By 1914 , large parts of the wotld
were controlled by various European powers (chart in TB pg. 110)
This competition caused several
disputes , one of which was the “Morocco Incident” in 1906 and 1911 between
France and Germany.
At that time France have greater power
than Germany.
France could come to Germany any time
and they can take over easily because they are stronger , so that’s the stress
point for Germany.
Wilhem II , Emperor of Germany , said
in 1898 : “ Our future lies upon the ocean”, and started building up a navy
The Germans did not make their own
dreadnought.
